New Name for Hillyard

Hillyard in 1899 was in the process of incorporating, and they were trying to pick a name. Hillyard is actually named for James J. Hill who built the largest railroad yard west of Minneapolis in Hillyard so they named it Hills Yard and later just Hillyard. In 1925 Hillyard was annexed by the city of Spokane and so today Hillyard is just a neighborhood in northeast Spokane.
